Project construction began in June 2012 and was primarily completed by November 2012, with final tasks completed in spring 2013.

The original estimated cost of this project was $180,000 of which $21,889 was to be funded by the BCWMC's Capital Improvement Project Closed Project Fund, $75,000 was funded by a 2011 Clean Water Fund grant awarded by the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources, and up to $83,111 was to be funded by the BCWMC's 2011 ad valorem tax levy collected via Hennepin County in 2012.

At its May 16, 2013, meeting, the BCWMC approved additional funding in the amount of $22,500 to complete the project. The final total cost of the project was $201,513.94, and the BCWMC reimbursed the City of Golden Valley for project costs in November 2013.

Project Description

The BCWMC, in cooperation with the City of Golden Valley, constructed the Wirth Lake Outlet Structure Modification Project to improve the water quality of Wirth Lake. The project replaced the outlet between Bassett Creek and Wirth Lake to reduce the amount of phosphorous entering Wirth Lake (by an estimated 55 pounds per year) during flood periods without changing lake water levels or the outflow capacity of the outlet. In 2014 Wirth Lake was removed from the Minnesota Impaired Waters List because the lake now meets state water quality standards.
