Project Number: CL-4
Currently, this project is in the feasibility study phase. A scope and budget for the study was approved by the BCWMC in July 2024. The study will involve chloride monitoring at ponds around the lake and within the lake, assessment of sources of chloride in the watershed draining to the lake, mass balance modeling, estimating the chloride load reduction necessary to meet water quality standards, and analyzing multiple alternatives to meet the project goals. , Outreach and communication with properties in the Crane Lake watershed are also part of the feasibility study phase.
Chloride levels in Crane Lake have risen significantly in recent years. Biological monitoring in the lake indicates that high chloride levels are likely impacting aquatic life. In coordination with the City of Minnetonka, this proposed project will study and implement mechanisms or practices to reduce chlorides reaching the lake. Because high chlorides are an issue throughout the watershed, this project could be a demonstration for implementation in other areas.
